Pot Hole Repair

I just moved into a farm house about a 1/2 mile off the road. The gravel drive is severely rutted with use. It has been a while since any attention was given it. You could drive with your hands off the wheel and stay on the road.

There are many pot holes with more everyday with the cold temps we have been having. My question is, should I use the backhoe or loader to cut a drain for the potholes first? I am thinking that when I box blade the road, if I don't have good drainage, then the area will still hold water.

I've never done this before, but the youtubes and this forum have some great info. Just haven't seen anything about allowing for drainage. Maybe it's not as big an issue as I am thinking.
