Using the FEL to dig soil

Can this be done without damaging the FEL or tractor? A dealer told me today that it's hard on the tractor. I may be buying a 1025r and can't afford the BH right now. I plan on building a patio out back. I have to remove the grass and dig down about 18" to lay a base. Should I not use the FEL to do this?
