HI guys I need to introduce myself my name is Adam and I live in Rockwell,NC I got into JD 300's about 2 years ago with my 1st purchase a 1980 317 with pto and tiller 46"deck(rotted) I paid 200. Got it home i rebuilt carb it ran for 15mins  turns out the old coil burned up i got in a used one off ebay now shes back to life. I ran the tiller, tilled 4 gardens. The series one was on its last leg smoked like the devil the next spring when I went to fire it up it had no fire the used coil did what was expected of it. Instead of rebuilding I decided a repower was in order I sold the old engine for 200 and talked to a buddy who got me a NEW vanguard 16hp for 300. Next me and another friend started on making it all work I got down to wiring drive shaft exhaust and a few other little details then lost interest due to extreme circumstances.
Even though I had really forgotten about my repower goals another friend told me he had an uncle that had 3 JD he wanted to sell for 300 I went to take a look amazingly it was a 317 no engine or deck, an 84 316 B43 engine that runs no rear end, and a 88 318 p218G complete with 46" deck in good shape I got it running but the starter winding are toast. 300 well spent Basically the 316 the 317 will be parted out also the original 317 will be parted due to a future purchase.
This spring I had to use my TroyBilt tiller  so i started out researching and relearning all I forgot I stumbled upon a deal on a barn kept 317 with 38 deck that was really nice for 400. Why so cheap the series one was long gone and the Kohler magnum 18 had grenaded that they put in it despite their good service record. I got there offered 325 he took it and I brought my new toy home. Realizing that this 317 was extremely nicer than my previous one i swapped the pto shaft and vanguard over and started back on the repower project wear I left off. I down to only needing driveshaft exhaust and pto clutch spaced my little brother is an engineer and he drew up in CAD a spacer plate for my PTO clutch need it CNCed then I will be ready for the test drive.
Cheers
