Gonna learn to weld..

Hey folks.. I'm a DIY hack and have a fairly well equipped shop.. My knowledge, shop and tools are basic compared to a pro but enough to handle most tasks around one's home..
A skill that has escaped me for many years now though.. Is simple welding.. There have be countless times where being able to fab a couple of pieces of metal together would have saved me big time and big dollars.. Soooo.. What I'd like are some opinions on what equipment someone like me should start out with.. I'll then ask for some advice on using it then practice on scrap metal and learn as I go.. Is this a good idea?, bad idea?.. Is this something no one should try without professional training?.. For the record.. I'm not building anything structural in my home or trying to build my own helicopter or something (ha!).. I just want to be able to rig something up when I need to, or put something that breaks back together again.. What equipment would you buy based on what I'm describing?.. Thanks!
