I really wanted a belt grinder like KennyD's (his is AWESOME!) but I can't afford that and I don't have the need for it like he does. I settled on this Mulititool attachment that you can install on most grinders. First, I bought the attachment to install in my Grizzly 8" 1 HP grinder you can see in the background. Of course it would not fit! It's just as well though because it is an 1800 RPM grinder and the belt speed would be low. So, I bought the Jet 8" 1 HP grinder from Northern Tool which was cheaper than ordering it from the Multitool attachment folks who also sell it. It's a 3450 RPM grinder so the belt speed is 5400 FPM which is fine.
Here is what I found when I went to install the Multitool attachment to the Jet grinder. They send a kit of hardware that is supposed to be enough to install it on most grinders. You would logically assume, because they sell the attachment on a Jet 8" 1 HP grinder just like the one I bought, that the kit would have the proper hardware.............right?..............wrong!
On the very first step of the installation you need 9 washers and the kit has 8. The bolts they send are 1/4" too short. Here is the really weird part. The bolts needed to install the first plate to the grinder have 8.8 stamped on the head just like a metric fastener, but they are actually 1/4"-20's and that is how they are called out in the instructions. So, since I'm not in town I got to drive 25 miles for 3 each 1/4"-20 bolts 1-1/4" long instead of the 3/4" long they send in the kit. My motto is "nothings ever easy" :thumbup1gif:
Here is another fun part. I called Trick Tools who sell the kit and tech support said that they knew the kit would not have the correct hardware for the Jet 1 HP grinder. Thanks a lot. It would have been nice to know that prior to receiving the attachment.
Going on: I got the attachment installed and now I have to address a new issue of the 7" disk plate having too much runout. I need to figure out a way to true it up so it turns in the same plane, otherwise the object I'm trying to grind well be bouncing on and off the disk. I haven't checked it yet but I think it's about 25 or 30 thousandths.
But the bottom line is: I like the attachment and it works pretty good. I used it today to sharpen my mower blades and then (belt change) clean them up with the scotch brite belt you see on the attachment in the. I'm happy with it.
