Possible fire in my JD mower

I had mowed the grass yesterday and smelled wood smoke and figured someone nearby had a fire going. I parked my, think its a D100, mower in the garage as always. My house is divided into two AC zones and my master bedroom is in the smaller zone with the handler in the garage. So about 1030 we walk in and bam, get hit with the strong smell of smoke, the same smoke I smelled from earlier when mowing. So I follow it through that zone and go out into the garage and a very strong smell of smoke, but nothing visible. I checked all over and didn't see anything. I opened the garage to air it out and the only thing I could come up with was the mower but I didn't smell anything too strong, but the whole place smelled so that isn't saying much. I disconnected the battery and after airing the place out, the strong smokey smell went away and running the AC took the smokey smell out of the interior of the house no problem(we only run it in there at night when we are actually in that part of the house). Throughout the night I had an alarm wake me up to check the area and aside from a low lingering smoke smell in the garage I didn't find anything which leads me to believe that the fire was electrical caused by the mower which went away once I disconnected the battery. I am going to start storing the mower outdoors under a tarp I thing after this(give me space for a reloading bench I guess).

Any ideas what might have caused this?
