I'm having a problem with my 2720 (Hydrostatic transmission) while mowing and looking for clues as to the problem. Yesterday, when I was in High gear and running the mid-PTO belly mower, the transmission got stuck in forward. I had to stand on the brake and kill the ignition. After taking it out of gear and restarting, I was able to operate the transmission in both H and L gear correctly. This happened several times and, when mowing in confined areas (e.g. close to the house, around trees, etc), is a bit unnerving.
I changed the hydraulic fluid and filter at the 50 hour point (last summer) and am currently at 145 hours. I hesitate to call for service on an intermittent problem which probably won't occur when the mechanic is present. I'm guessing that the hydraulic control valve/piston controlled by the forward/reverse pedals is getting stuck in the forward position; there's nothing preventing the pedals from operating freely.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? What was the cause and cure?
