1981 John deere 316

I have a 1981 john deere 316 and my problem is that when i try to crank the tractor, there is no fire to the coil. I ran a jumper wire from the battery to the coil and it cranked right up. now that it is running and i flip the pto switch on, there is nothing. I can jump it to and it works. i put on a new ign switch on it thinking that might be the problem and to no prevail. Will the time delay module have anything to do with my problem. Help please.
