New to the forum - good to see so many posts on the newer JD tractors. I've struggled getting info on the 5 series JD tractors and am glad I have found this place.
Looking at a JD 5055d two wheel drive tractor. Don't need or want a 4x4 tractor, will be doing some bush hogging with a 6 footer, making some square bales of hay, cutting, raking and baling with this tractor.
When looking at the specs on this tractor and reading every thread I can find on them, I gather the 5055d (and 5045d - maybe others) might be "older" design JD tractors, but in a new package, with new paint and from a factory in India. Not a problem for me - I like the old design stuff.
The engine is a 2.9L (3029) and it looks like that engine has been used on many similar hp JD tractors over the past 20+ years. I gather this is a good engine - long term? Anything to be fearful from them? I like that it's tier 2 and no DEF or intercooler, computer, etc. Aside from the older tier 2 (which I prefer), any electronics on this engine or is it totally mechanical?
The tranny is 8F/4R. I see this configuration on older JD tractors. Question is - is it a tranny design that has been around for a long time or something new that happens to be 8F/4R? Is this a reliable tranny?
How robust are the dry clutches on these tractors?
Independent PTO - is it full on or can you feather it on. I'm concerned about slamming the PTO on with my old baler.
Hydraulics - I've read some troubling posts regarding them heating up, not functioning and melting fuel tanks. I've seen the 5055d about 9 months ago, but wasn't in the market then and only got a cursory look-see. If I get a one, the dealer will have to order or get it from another dealer. I'd be buying the tractor without seeing it first - not a problem, but....
I looked at a 5055e (4x4) last night and it looks like some of them had a small oil cooler in front of the radiator. Upon reading the posts about overheating hydraulics, is this auxiliary cooler the fix?
Anyone small farming with the 5055/45/d/e series tractors and if so, how are they holding-up?
Anyone tried to make 4x4 round bales of hay with their 5055 and if so, how'd it work out?
Any advice, tips, etc., would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Bill
