Kennyd had a beautiful thread on his on-going well problems and there was a side discussion on whole-house filter systems and the "stuff" that people were finding in them.
In my case, the filter is an absolute necessity and I mentioned that I get about a month out of each cartridge before I need to change it. I changed mine yesterday after it had been in place since Sept. 1st. (I was 2 days late!)
I thought I'd post a few pics of what I pulled out and see if anyone has any ideas on a better solution for me. When I first pulled this out it was entirely caked with the thick layer you can see. Most of that fell off when I got clumsy and dropped it into the bucket but you can still see how thick it gets. There doesn't seem to be any sand or pebbles in there like other people get. It's all rust... thick like a slippery clay. It works great for greening up the lawn but I could do without it!
This is a standard 5 micron, spun cotton filter.
