Air Conditioning question

On Sunday we had a gathering at the house. The outside temperature was around 90 degrees and the humidity was wicked high. As a result, everyone stayed mostly in the house. However, with around 40 people (including kids) coming and going, the doors were opening and closing constantly. Every light in the house was on all afternoon. So, when I notice around 4:00 that the inside temp was 77 degrees with the thermostat set at 74, I was not totally surprised. This is the first time I have ever seen my air conditioning get behind. The unit upstairs was keeping up, but the 1st floor/basement unit was 3 degrees behind.

When everyone finally left closer to 9 PM, and I went back to check the thermostat I was worried to see it was still at 77 degrees! At this point, I shut it down and opened the access cover for the a-coil to find it iced over. Needless to say, I could kick myself for not turning off the compressor earlier and letting the fan run for an hour or so.

After I let it thaw and restarted, everything seems back to normal. I have not seen an increase in electric usage this summer. This is the first time I have seen it get behind at all. The filter is fresh. I only found one floor register that had been kicked closed. I really can't believe it was an airflow restriction issue. So now what? Do I assume I have lost some charge? The system is just under 2 years old. It is a Trane XR15.

I have read that under the perfect circumstances (high humidity within the house, extended runtime, etc) that a perfectly healthy system can ice up. Do any of you agree with that theory?

I hate to bring someone out just to tell me everything checks out. On the other hand, if I do nothing at the end of the season, I could end up in a jam when we get our first heat wave in the spring.

Thanks in advance for your input,

Lee
