145 Automatic Steering Issue

Hi Everyone!

I've been having a repeted steering issue with my lawn tractor. About 2 years now. The problem started where the lawn mower would not turn left. The steering wheel would just turn/click and sometimes turn a bit. After a while the steering wheel will eventually "free spin" and could no longer turn at all.

I replaced the steering pinion gear and steering sector gear (the plate that turns with the gear). It worked pretty well the for most of the next season but started having issues again. The pinion gear looked prett chewed up so I replaced it. This season was fine at the begining but started having issues again. Again, I replaced the pinion gear and sector gear. This time I also replace the steering shaft bushings, both of them. Within a few weeks I've started havin this problem again.

I imagine that there is a bigger cause and I'm just "fixing" the symptoms.

When laying on the ground looking at the gears when someone is turning the wheel, it seam like the "plate" moves up or down as the pinion gear turns and the teeth no longer mesh. I've made sure that the bolt that attaches the plate (sector gear) to the body is tight.

I can't figure out the issue.

The only other thing I can think of is something is bent. There are rods that connect the wheels to the sector gear and they have a lot of play.

What am I missing? Any ideas??

Thank you!

David
