Looks like I made a bad deal on an X300

I just bought an X300 with 575 hours on it. When I checked it out, everything seemed okay, but after mowing for about 15 minutes, it gets slower and slower until it won't move forward on even the slightest of grades. I have seen lots of posts that say this is a problem with the hydrostatic transmission and they are not serviceable.

Others say that they had good luck changing the oil by removing the transmission, turning it upside down to drain the oil and then refilling it. I have eliminated the possibility of problems with a slipping drive belt or axle/wheel problems. The fan on top is definitely spinning and the transmission is growling and trying to move forward, it just does not have enough power.

I am handy with tools, so I was wondering, with a transmission in this condition is it worth it to remove the transmission, empty it of the oil by draining overnight and then refill it with whatever is recommended? The real question is will that restore the power and make it usable or is it just likely to be me wasting time after wasting the money buying it?

If that isn't likely to make it usable, what are my options other than licking my wounds and moving on to another tractor?
