Been thinking for years of putting in a attic ladder out in our garage to help get Christmas decorations up and down. Been using a 5ft step ,always a pain and getting older wanted something a little safer.
Since Lowes is on our way 90% of the time checked website for prices and features. All the standard ones or in stock I didn't want not enough load capacity and ladder rungs to narrow. So I looked at a Warner and Century ladder with load of 350 and above. Each had about a 5 " deep step and a price tag of $388-411 ,from Lowes and shipped to the store. Thought way to high in price when base ladder are about $120-150.
Went to Home Depot website , wife drives past it , at least once a week. Same ladders as Lowes ,Home Depot price around $200.00
Settled for a Century Smooth Operator Series 8 ft. x 60 in. x 30 in. Wood Attic Ladder with Gas Strut 350 lb. Load Capacity
Store SKU# 367965
Internet/Catalog# 203510781
Price $199.00 to the store.
Decided on a 30" instead of the 24" because ,a 24" or 30" is not that wide when all is said and done. Yes your opening is that size, you loose about a 1- 2" in going up the ladder.
Had to cut and move my ceiling joist over to 30" instead of 24" but I'm very happy with the choice. Easy to install took maybe 2hrs all total . Today I was able to bring all the Christmas decorations down and didn't have to turn any boxes sideways.
Over the years we have found Lowes will be close to double or more in price compared to Home Depot on any special order item. Sounds like price gouging to me .
