JD 2720 rear PTO shaft to tight

Hello everyone,

We recently moved to a new place and with it we also bought a 2010 JD 2720 that already lived there. The previous owner had used the 62D mid-mower as a “bushhog” and so it had to go to the dealer for repair. While waiting I picked up a new Howse 500 cutter and proceeded to hook it up. No problem until I tried to fit the driveshaft coupler to the JD 2720 PTO output shaft. Would not go on.

Hammered a bit, went on 1 inch, required come-along and more hammering to get it off. Yes I pressed the pin. Sanded the paint off the JD PTO shaft, also the grooves and also sanded the inside of the HOWSE coupler. Finally, with a lot of hammering, got it on. Now hooking up the cutter has become a 2-man job, with one aligning the driveline while I back up the tractor. Not an acceptable solution.

Took of the coupling (come-along, more hammering) and took the coupling to the place where I got the cutter. They slipped it onto another tractor (Kubota) no problem. On and off, easy. So it looks like my JD 2720 output shaft is “too big”.

I sanded some more tonight but I am looking for a better solution. Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a part that I could mount permanently on the JD PTO output shaft so I don’t have to deal with it anymore – overspeed clutch, quicker quick connect or anything else come to mind?

Thank you everyone!

Mike
