2013 Basement Renovation

This week after having a new furnace installed my wife and I decided to remove the drop ceiling and drywall our basement. We will end up with 8' ceilings throughout the majority of the finished basement.

Part of the reason for upgrading the heating and cooling was the cold air return was lacking, 2/3rd of the house was being pulled through a 10"x8" air duct. I'm not an HVAC guy by any means buy I know a forced air system needs to be balance on the supply and return. I was convinced that the biggest issue was the fact that all the return vents are 1/2 the size of the supply registers. The small return vents coupled with the fact that the former owner had them tied together with way to much 6" flex duct made me think I needed to enlarge and straighten out the return runs.

When I removed one section of the 10"x8" from another that was making a over lapping 90* bend I found that there was only a 3"x4" hole connecting the 2 pieces of duct.

Be cause the former owner / builder of the house had no clue how to run electrical I had to re do much of the wiring to all for the drywall to be attached to the floor joists.

Here are a couple of shots of the electrical room after I reran the some of the circuits to tidy things up.

The former owner cut every ground wire as soon as it entered an electrical box. So far I have removed 10/2 w/g MNB that ran across the ceiling to power one 15amp circuit that had 2 15 amp outlets on it. I removed one run of 10/3 w/g that was running from the electrical panel on a 15 amp breaker to a 3 way light switch, keep in mind for the actual 3 way they used 12/2 w/g using the ground wire for the neutral.

This is the pile of WTF'ness that I have pulled out and rewired so far on this project.
